What are the “Field of Anfield Road” lyrics

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Shankly, they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it’s glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
‘Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley, they have taken you away
But you led the great eleven
Back in Rome in 77
And the Redmen they’re still playing the same way

The glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road x2

What is the history of the Fields of Anfield Road song?

A Liverpool fan by the name of Edward R Williams took the original song which was sung by fans of the Republic of Ireland and Celtic and adapted the lyrics to make it Liverpool-specific.

The chant was however modified in 2009 to include a final verse, which commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster. John Power from the Cast and the La’s, two iconic Liverpool bands, might we add, co-wrote the final verse together. Ex-Liverpol players Phil Thompson and Bruce Grobbelaar came together to record the vocals for the additional verse. The new version of the song managed to chart on the 12th of April 2009 at position 16. With the song reaching position 14 at its peak.
