Why is Leicester mentioned separately in the “We all follow the Arsenal” chant?
There has never been any clear clarification as to Leicester is mentioned separately, but the general theories are:
1) The chant was stolen from Chelsea fans who used to have a fierce rivalry with Leicester, hence it’s mentioned in the “we all follow the Chelsea” chant which was then adopted by Arsenal.
2) There was a road sign on the M1 that said “The North & Leicester”. So, fans had called out Leicester separately.
3) Arsenal played Sheffield Wednesday five times in the 1978-1979 FA Cup third round. In that third round Arsenal played Sheffield Wednesday 5 ties in the 3rd round with the fourth and fifth replay being played in Leicester.
The general assumption is that it’s due to the latter, but this has never been confirmed by anyone. Nonetheless, make sure you sing along the next time you hear the chant being sung. Arsenal did win the 5th game replay, where they went down 2-0 before coming back to beat Manchester United 3-2. Arsenal wore a yellow ribbon in that final which is another famous chant.
