When did the 49 49 undefeated chant start?

The exact date that the “49, 49 undefeated” chant started is not known, but, likely, it emerged soon after the end of the 2003-2004 season and midway through the 2004-2005 season, when Arsenals’ 49-game unbeaten record was ended by Manchester United.

Our favourite part about this chant is that in the 2002-2003 season, on September 21st 2002, Arsene Wenger was quoted saying that Arsenal would go unbeaten that season. Unfortunately for Arsenal, they were unbeaten for 9 games but then lost to Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park thanks to a very memorable goal from a young Wayne Rooney in the 90th minute. Then, after Arsenal completed their unbeaten season in 2004, Arsene Wenger was pictured, with a now iconic picture of him holding a t-shirt that said “Comical Wenger” along with his very famous quote “I think we can go the whole season unbeaten”.
