William Saliba Player Profile
William Saliba is a French professional footballer born in Bondy, France, on the 24th of March 2001. William Saliba started his youth career at AS Bondy in 2008, progressing into the Saint-Étienne youth team. Saliba’s talent shone through as he was awarded a professional contract in May 2018 at the age of 17.
William Saliba spent one season at Saint-Étienne, making 19 total appearances before European clubs called for his services. in the summer of 2019, Saliba opted to join Arsenal for a reported 27 million pounds, after Arsenal and Tottenham were willing to pay the fee for the player.
However, it took almost 3 years for Saliba to make his debut for Arsenal. This was due to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, opting to put him on loan again, after his initial loan back to Saint-Étienne when he first signed under Unai Emery. During those three years, Saliba spent his time playing for the following clubs, Saint-Étienne, Nice and Marseille, who were all in the French Ligue 1. In his final spell at Marseille, Saliba was elected to the Ligue 1 team of the year and also won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award.
Saliba made his debut against Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2022/2023 Premier League, where it’s safe to say the Arsenal faithful fell in love with him immediately. Arsenal were on course to win the Premier League title that season. However, on the 16th of March, in a Europa League tie against Sporting Lisbon, Saliba suffered a back injury which put him out for the remainder season. The injury, was a turning point for Arsenal, as many believe should Saliba had not got injured, they would’ve gone on to win the Premier League. Saliba was praised for his performances that season as he was selected in the PFA team of the year for the 2022/2023 Premier League Season.
